single or multi power supply?

<font color='#000000'>I see where different brands of multi-channel amps have a different approach to power supply design. I seem to believe one massive power supply would be better than one for each channel in a multi-channel amp. My reasoning is, in 2-channel operation, there would be more power available since the two amps would have the whole massive power supply to feed from.

In a multi-channel amp that has seperate power supplies, would only two be used in 2-channel mode while the others idle?

<font color='#000000'>Hi
There are different philosophies for Multi-Channel amp design Purely from a custom installers piont of view I am going to agree with you on the single transformer design  for these reasons Almost every multi-transformer amp that I have installed had problems with buzzing transformers and hum in the system loop
5 or 7 transformers in a single unshielded chassis probably has a lot to do with it  The other thing I noticed was the multi-channel transformer amps dissipate more heat not good for enclosed rack systems
As far as sound quality I think its a wash  either 5 or 7 mono blocks in a single chassis with smaller transformers   or a multi-channel amp with a large single transformer    with that said my favorite
is The  Halcro Mono Blocks   Just give me 7 of them

In a multi-channel amp that has seperate power supplies, would only two be used in 2-channel mode while the others idle? &nbsp;

In a true mono block design &nbsp;5 for a 5channel 7 for a 7 channel they would remain idle &nbsp; In a design where there is
say only 2 transformers for a 5 channel amp like the Sherwood 9080 &nbsp;they would not remain Idle
make sense ?</font>

<font color='#000000'>You sure it's not the cable coax into the tv causing the hum? This was my problem, although it was before I got my amp. It did not affect my receiver, but my powered sub picked it up. I added a cable isolater that someone here recommended. It did the trick.

<font color='#000000'>Hi
Although Cable and Satellite terminations are major origination points of RF  This was not the case with these amps
I still have a Sherbourn 5/1500 here at my shop that I wont sell to anyone because of a Transformer Hum (I am going to use it to power some LFE Butt kickers)  These amps were terrible, part of the reason I dropped the line 3 years ago   It was just the nature of the Amps  I have discussed this with other installers that have had the same problem  with this brand and other Multi-transformer amps
The Halcro's DM68  is $38,000 each
can you please contribute to the Ray wants a Halcro fund?
I can take Pay Pal

Arm and a leg. I might have to sell my wife's G35! Then I will be missing an arm and a leg!
