Since There Are Reports of the SL1200 Being Discontinued...

Has everyone heard about Technics discontinuing, officially, the SL1200 turntable? I read this somewhere, and it concerned me, as that's the one I was saving up for to add to my 2-channel system -- is this true? Are they really dropping this legend?

If that's the case, I now need different direction for turntable advice -- what would be the recommended stand-in choice for the 1200? I was looking into KAB's selections, and see now that Kevin plans to sell refurbished ones going forward but they will be heavily modded, and will be running for upwards of $1K, and I simply can't spend that much. I was thinking of looking at the 1200 clone from Audio-Technica, but this thing just looks like a cheap DJ table to me. What other choices do I have beyond the plastic $100 Denons, Sonys, etc?

Now that the SL1200 may be out of the question, I may be looking at an automatic return type, so if there are any of those that can be recommended, please fire away...

Thank You!

The SL 1200 is discontinued.

You can buy a used one, or buy a good budget turntable.

Any of those Project turntables will be fine, and will be of a quality at least as good as the rest of your system.

You where just given a whole site dedicated to turntables and a page full of suggestions. Specifically the Projects.

I think the only modern turntables that offer any automatic (or semi-automatic) features are some Denons or Thorens turntables. Both are available via that link TLS supplied. You just gotta put in a little effort on your own here and do some research.

If you're referring to the first reply in the thread, as I explained to Phillip, I have certain members on ignore and was not alerted to that message.

Are you planning to use it as a DJ table and need to be able to scratch and back cue?

If that's the case this Numark is probably the next best thing:

Hi Hicks,

No -- don't need it as a DJ table. It's going to be used in a two channel home stereo setup for LP and 45RPM playback. The reason I was going for the Technics was because it was recommended to me in here some time ago as a great audiophile table as well, and not only for DJ use -- I actually used the SL1200s when I was a mobile DJ years ago, but now I need a table for other purposes.

I was actually thinking of the Audio Technica which is the "copy" of the SL1200 in many ways.

I guess you need to thicken that skin some more. :DHe's one of the most knowledgeable members here. People may not like his answers sometimes but at least he doesn't sugar coat anything or BS an answer. I consider him one of the most valued members of the forum.

I'm not saying he's not knowledgeable -- but that is precisely what the ignore feature is for, when a disagreement between two people escalates into a situation that simply cannot be smoothed over and a certain member just does not want to read any further comments from a different member.

Your bolded statement above is why the ignore feature exists on forums, and why it was used exclusively in this case. For reasons beyond "sugar coating" an answer.
