Simple set up home audio question...

Hello, Ive been considering updating my home theater system. I had a buddy tell me how his Bose cinemate II works. You basically have 1 wire you hook up to the TV, and the system works with everything thats hooked to the TV...XBOX, Direct TV, Blu ray player etc...Theres no receiver that you have to hook each component up to and theres no buttons to have to push to pair the right component either, the audio is just there. Basically it sounds as if the TV works as the receiver. I recently discovered that there are sound bars that work like this as well....my question is, is there a 5.1 or 7.1 theater system that works like this? ..Or is there a receiver or set up that will allow a set up like this? like a sort of extension from the tv speakers? Finally, even a receiver that will auto detect the component being played would be good? I just really like the idea of having my TV and components all working through a home theater system with as few a steps and processes to do when switching from the TV, Xbox, PS2, etc......I also like the idea of having as few of wires as possible. Any ideas?

Apples to oranges comparison.

You do realize that that Bose system is only a two channel system with a common bass box, not a "real" multi-channel HT system, don't you?

A 2.1 computer speaker system connected to an earphone jack can emulate that functionality.

That type of setup is usually "backward" from what most people would do. Usually, you hook components to the reciever and 1 cable to the TV. You want components to TV and 1 Cable to the reciever?

It would certainly "work" that way, but with many limitations. I think the biggest limitation is that TVs usually have an optical cable out (at best) and those can't do the HD audio codecs to the reciever.

Why would you want to set it up this way and not the "normal" way?

Yeah,...well I think. Im not the most savvy when it comes to audio systems really. If Im correct in thinking 2.1 channel means 2 speakers I think Im sort of on track with you.....If that is true, Thats kind of why I wanted to go with a 5.1 or 7.1 system. I would just love that easy setup if its even possible or available....
