As my theater room is layed out with the equipment at the rear I have the old problem of pointing my remote backwards. I need to simply have a IR reciever with an emmitter at the back of the room. I would rather avoid using the little IR mice that attach to each piece and use a larger emitter that hits all the equipment.

The problem is that I can find IR setups that are either cheap pieces of junk that get poor reviews from users or I find elaborate systems that no doubt work fine but are really overkill for my setup.

I found a simple schematic and tried building one but it didn't work. I suspect that the gp npn transistor was too weak in this application.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a simple (read: inexpensive) solution here? I do have a run of cat5 sitting there just for this use. (I did some thinking ahead. :))

I would think the best solution for that room setup is an IR/RF remote.

The Universal Remote (Home Theater Master) RF10/20/30 + PowerBlaster sounds like an ideal solution. You can get the RF20+PowerBlaster for about $125.

If the blaster can be placed in front of the components then you don't need emitters at all but it does come with 10 emitters. The emitters are very strong and I've found that you rarely have to attach them to the components - just get them anywhere near the components.

Thanks but

I have a Harmony already that I'm not eager to give up. ;)

Has anyone used some of these inexpensive RF based IR extenders? I've seen them for fairly cheap but people reviewing them complain about poor sensitivity and other problems.

A unit like this seems perfect but the customer reviews have me concerned.
