Simple computer setup

I'm in the market for a small set of speakers for my desk. I recently moved and now have a small office I can work in and have music playing. I'm thinking 2 speakers (with or without a sub unsure at the moment) that ideally would be on my desk (small is good). I would like to keep it simple so no receiver, amp, etc. I'd like to be able to get home plug my MacBook Pro in and play music. My sources are typically iTunes, YouTube or Slacker. My music section is fairly broad, ranging from EDM to vocal type music (think John Newman and Sam Smith). I don't game on this computer (Xbox for that) and won't really watch movies either so strictly for music. My budget for this is rather small, I'd like to keep it under $400 and even less is better. The volume will typically be low to medium, I live in a townhouse so I cannot be too loud.

Not sure what your idea of “small” is, but the Swans M200 are great active computer speakers. The Audioengine offerings are also popular. Just make sure you get them with the larger woofers. The A2 doesn’t have enough bass extension to blend with a subwoofer, if you end up going with one (and I would recommend using a sub, no matter which speakers you go with).

My computer is a MacBook Pro, so just an headphone jack I would assume. I also have usb, hdmi and lightning.
