Okay, if I'm not the biggest vascillating hot airbag ever to grace these halls, then sue me.

Alright, I've asked for comments/help with my projector choices and done a fair amount of research. I ditched the Runco because I have heard nothing but bad stuff about them, not only from users but from retailers also. I heard some good stuff about "Ruby", but the further I dig, the more confilicting opinions I get about it. I think the Ruby is just too trendy for me now.

Alright, I'm now focused on the new Sim2 projectors. I have viewed the Sim2 300 Link and it has a fabulous picture, but was selling for around 18k when I saw it. Now it's been discontinued and Sim2 has finally come out with a semi-affordable projector for around 13K, the Sim 3X Lite.

If the picture quality of the Lite is anywhere near the discontinued model, I would be quite happy. I have read nothing but good things about the Sim2 projectors and before I take the plunge, again, I wanted some educated opinions.

Well???

If you are looking at 13k projectors, I am surprised you are dismissing the Ruby at 7.4k so fast. Have you checked AVS web site on the $3500 and above board?

I haven't written off the Ruby yet, it's just that I've heard so many things, like it's not bright enough for any ambient light situations, the 1080dpi needs to be used with a blu-ray to really get the most out of it, etc.

I would like to view sports, news and other things with a window open occasionally, and I've just been told the Ruby will not do this.

You are absolutely right about the price though, 7,400 is almost half of 13k, but I really do want a wonderous experience for my family when watching special movies.

Dagnabbit!

I just got back from AVS forum and now, the Optoma HD81 seems to be the new dream machine for the 9 to 10K range. External scaler, true 1080, reams of lumens, etc. Problem is, won't be out until this summer. I may have to wait.

Gallery?

Ummm... YEAH!

1080p is not going to be the incredibly buggy technology shift it could have been had it come out 1-2 years ago... or more. 1080p rear projection is all over the place and DLP is pretty much a rock solid technology. So the new lineup of 1080p projectors should follow suit. Plus, some companies already are a step ahead of the game and have accepted 1080p input on their 720p projectors for a year or two.

So, yeah, think really hard about buying now if your budget is high as it will only be a few months before 1080p DLP machines are released and it does look like about $10K will be the magic number for the first year or so. I expect within two years we may see them well under $5K.

Really though, a lot of projector companies have been waiting a while for the 1080p DLP chip. They were ready last year, and pretty much had the engineering done just in case the chip came out.

Well, here it is (finally) and you will see glorious things from projector manufacturers in the next year. This basically represents the highest level that will match up with broadcast and HD discs for several years to come I imagine. Perfect for THX seating distances in the home theater and the total killer system.

If you OWN a projector already it definitely is not time to upgrade yet.

You are right. If you need to watch in ambient lighting, Ruby will not do a good job. Not sure which front projector will as that ambient light is a killer on the screen. Certainly different condition from a rear projection or direct screen.
You will need a torch of a projector, but then, not sure which will have the contrat ratio of the Ruby.

Hope you will find something to meet your needs.
