Sides versus Rears in 7.1

Is there any reason to have a speaker capable of producing greater sound on the sides than there is in the rears in a 7.1 setup, or would you just use the same speaker for both?

If you were to add front height or wides going beyond 7.1 would any of the speakers other than the fronts and center have greater demands/needs than any of the others?

Thanks!!!

Conventional practice has the best speakers front & center, and lesser speakers for surrounds. BUT, some experts here have equally impressive speakers all the way around, and say it makes a huge difference. I don't know, but will soon find out. I see you returned your Aperions. I currently have a 7.2 system w/ 4x Verus Grand Towers for Front L/R & Surround L/R, and little KEF eggs for Surround Rears. I'm getting new Front L/Rs, (that I think will be better for music), and moving the front Grand Towers to Rear Surrounds. So I'll have pretty good towers for the 4 Surrounds. I'll let you know if it makes any difference.

IMHO, they should have the same capabilities and therefore should be identical. Height speakers don't interest me at all after hearing a setup with them, but I'll guess at this point in the game, they're not going to be as active as discrete surrounds.

I'm using all bi-pole towers, and went from DefTech BP10'S to BP20'S for my surrounds and thought that even that made a difference, but I also have a pretty large room.

I like a good rear sound stage. To me it's a whole difference experience with good rears. I'd say just as important as your front stage. If you would ever listen to Alex's (fuzz) system you would be blown away by his side and rear surrounds. He has an awesome front stage, but listening to his system you'd be more impressed by his rear sound stage.
