while watching a movie last night my marantz 5008 shut its self down an blinked red I put my hand on the top an it was pretty warm I waited a couple of min. An turned it back on it worked fine the rest of the night. So this could be a dumb question but here it goes. I changed my system back to 7.1 height speakers did not work for me but along with the 15 inch sub I hooked up the small subs in my front powered speakers plus I have bass shakers going so to hook all this up I needed to use two splitters plus I needed to go into the settings an turn the bass up a bit can all this be to much for this reciever?

If all your speakers are powered, neither they nor a normal powered sub would put a serious load on your AVR because you are not even using the amp.
You say the unit was warm. The processor will get very warm by itself. My first thought is that a thermal protection circuit was engaged. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation around the unit (the manual will likely specify something extreme like 12" above and 6" on either side). Also think back to when the failure occurred. What was the room temperature? Had you had the unit on for a longer than normal period? If it is in a cabinet, you may need to move it out. I like to play it extra safe and will put hockey pucks under the four feet so flow into the bottom vents is easy and leave at least 3" clearance above (I have my AVR atop my cabinet with the center speaker 3" above it) I believe this allows plenty of free flow for natural convection.

It appears to be a thermal shutdown. Make sure there is plenty of airflow around the AVR.

Thanks for the help guys. The room temp is around 63 I keep it cool. The thing I wondered was it has never shut down even in the summer where the room is near 80 degrees. When I changed my setup back to 7.1 an got rid of the front heights I did the audessey setup again I noticed my SBL Only made noise from the tweeter so I simply moved the banana plugs to the other set of posts on the speakers. This seemed to work.this shutdown happened watching the remake of poltergeist which has a ton of bass would a bad speaker do this?

I would generally say no, unless there is a short inside the speaker.
You say you switched the terminals on the back of the SBL, but there should be some connector (often a gold plated bar) in plain sight running between the two positive connections and another between the negatives, so it should make absolutely no difference which terminals you use, you should be using both no matter which terminal you plug into!

When I moved the plugs up on the posts I took those bridges out was that wrong? I was thinking if there was a short on the bad post it wouldn't effect the other posts if I took it out. Also in the setting I turned the bass up a bit

It sounds like you have a defect in that speaker. The dual terminals are for bi-amping and that is the only time you are supposed to remove the jumpers. The upper set of terminals goes more directly to the tweeters and the lower terminals go more directly to the woofer. If you listen, it should seem out of balance between treble and bass.

I replaced the two back surround speakers an watched a couple of heavy based action movies an never had a problem so maybe it was a speaker problem

Connect only one speaker or device per channel. No splitters allowed.
