Shunyata Hydra AC conditioner ?

Hi all !

Has somebody used Shunyata Research Hydra AC conditioners ?
http://www.shunyata.com

Their claim miracles, but I somewhat suspicious, especially after reading "Cable face-off" on this forum and discovering that this company also makes crazy expensive power cords and speaker cables using some "matrix" technology (looks like a snake oil to me).

My question is not about surge protection , but about improvements in audio/video quality.

Thanks a lot

Power conditioners in principle are not hype, but I would think that theirs is. I'm sure it does a good job, but that you could get comparable or better performance at a lower price. When you buy from a company like that (or Monster), you're paying for the brand name, not for the extra performance. While I have not personally used the device (I don't have the kind of money to blow on rediculously expensive audio stuff), I would think that you would do much better with a company like Tripp-Lite, Furman, Panamax, or APC. These companies have been around for years and know from their own published research how to protect your equipment. APC has just come out with a new HT power conditioner with optional battery backup. Their specs are very impressive and their approach is purely scientific, no magical listening tests or flowerly language.

Thanks for your reply

Hi Jaxvon !

Thanks for your reply. I don't have $$$ to shed on these devices either. and I currently consider Tripp Lite. I don't know if you visited their website and saw all reviews from A/V publications. I am starting getting paranoic thoughts that it's sort of world conspiracy to rip me from my money :) But, somehow they exists means somebody is buying their staff, including 200$ powercords.

I also sent letter to Gene asking for "AC conditioner face-off" type of paper (simular to the excellent job they did with "Cable face-off". Hopefully they could find time and resources for this.

Yep, they would sound good, but then so would the 12 ga from Home Depot sound equally good :D

Consumers Report in Jan 2000 tested a number of surge suppressors. Tripp Lite came out on top.

All of consumer marketplace is after your money, be very careful. ;)

I don't mind to pay, but

Mtrycraft !

I don't mind to pay but,
I don't like to be fed all kind of metaphisic bs. When I see companies which selling 40$ a-piece ceramic posts which you need to put under your 300$ per feet multi-isolated cryogenically treated etc-etc-etc speaker cables to avoid direct contact with the carpet and people swear that after putting those ceramics isolators bass becames "tighter", soundstage "wider" and sound "warmer" it really piss me off and makes me wonder who are the authors of those reviews. I feel it like a personal insult to my common sence.

Those Shunyata AC conditioner/powercords claim sort of fit in this category, but
I still decided to check. It's an enigma for me that those companies not only make a living but a good living. Looks like fitness, health and audio/video is 3 top areas to fool people and milk them out of their wits and money

Oh man, cable elevators. Have you ever seen the "science" behind those? It has something to do with static charges that build up. Of course, the wire isn't moving on the floor, so it's impossible to build up a charge, but what the hell, right? It sounds good and poor fools buy into it.

No different than cult followers, they just want to hear something that supports their faith and fall in line to follow unquestioning. There reviewers are gullible people in the hobby. I know one although he doesn't review anymore. He told me what would he tell his readers if he couldn't hear differences? He couldn't take the humiliation, etc.

I feel it like a personal insult to my common sence.

Welcome aboard :D Many are ill equipped to come to that conclusion.

That is the smart thing to do.

How about Sylvia Brown or John Edwards. The pushers of magic for Penta Water at a ridiculous price. They all make a good living off the gullible end of the gene pool :D
