Should sound be coming from rear surround speakers?

I am feeding a Yamaha RXV371 receiver via ARC from my LG 65uk6090puaTV. Is it normal for the left and right surrounds to be getting signal all the time?..i.e, the same sound coming from mains is coming from surrounds... I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that content on the surrounds was only when it was encoded for those channels? I appreciate any sharing of knowledge on this...Thanks

I would check the listening mode the receiver is in. All channel stereo will output the same sound to all speakers connected.

Sounds like a 5 channel or multi channel stereo setting. What sound mode are you using (Dolby, DTS, Stereo)?

It's not the speaker settings we're talking about per say, it's the surround sound setting. If you are feeding sound from a TV via ARC you're probably using a streaming app on the TV (Netflix or whatever) Or you are just watching a TV program that you want to hear through your speakers. Either way, chances are, it's probably a Dolby Digital (5.1) signal. In which case, the surrounds should not be getting the same signal as your front speakers. For example, if the scene on the TV is two people sitting in a restaurant talking, you are going to hear the dialogue from those two people from your front speakers, mostly the center channel. From the surrounds you are likely to hear background noise from the restaurant (other people talking or whatever). In other words, surrounds speakers are more for ambiance and effects. But again, they should not be getting the same signal as the front speakers. Yamaha ARVs normally have a "Straight" mode which decodes the signals straight into the appropriate channels without any additional processing. Did you try that?
