I would not recommend it. There is no such thing as a 'generic' - there is either an exact match, or something close - and something close typically will fail far more quickly than the exact match.

I've heard very few good stories from people who have bought non-OEM replacement lamps.

I agree, stay away from generic or rebuilt bulbs. You can check this guy out. I have bought 2 bulbs off him and they are Manufactures bulb that originally went into the projector. http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZlowestprice1234567QQhtZ-1
