Should I upgrade to seperate amp

So I finally got this home and set up.

I'm thinking that the Nad T743 is signifigantly underrated in power output, at 5x50. Needless to say, the improvement was not as much as I had hoped for.

I have both gains at nearly 3/4ths to tie in with my other speakers being powered by the AVR, with all individual speaker settings at 0. There's not too noticable a difference to me that I can notice yet.

Worse, there is some major static issues that have randomly emitted now from 1 channel at first, and both another time? I'm going to be picking up "cheater plugs" do deal with the hum I notice, but this "static" is loud and has come and gone. I hope it won't come back, but could I have a defective amp?

If it's defective it appears I'd be better served by returning it and upgrading my fronts to SCS's rather than my SBS's.
