I'm looking at getting a Motorola 6412 HDTV PVR and I was wondering what you would reccommend. The box has the option of both component and dvi output but my reciever only supports component. so would you reccomen putting it in the same room as the Crestron racks and other servers and run a 10 foot dvi through the wall to the bigscreen or just run it through component?

Try it with the component. If you're happy with what you get, don't worry about it.... :)

i run my Cable PRV (HD through Comcast) just straight to my TV. This way for normal TV watching I don't need to mess with the receiver. Plus my fiance doesn't get confused with how to hear sound and all that crap.

i couldn't tell the difference between the DVI or component straight to my TV or through my v2500. So I just used the DVI cable that the guy at best buy talked me into getting when I bought the TV

I just figured out that my set-up was a little off after again recording "24" on my Pioneer DVD recorder. I have my digital cable, Denon DVD and the Pioneer all going into the component inputs of my Yamaha RX-V2500. And I had an S-video cable going from the digital cable into the receiver then out of the receiver and into the DVD-Recorder...this got me a B/W picture....So I just figured out that using the s-video cable from the digital cable directly into the DVD recorder....A color picture. As for the sound.. I am using 3 optical cables each from the cable/dvd/dvd-rec into the optical inputs of the receiver and left/right cables from cable to dvd-rec.

Works great....now.

how much does a good dvd recorder cost?

i have burner on my pc that burns all formats but the cable company told me there was no way to transfer files from a motorola 6412 over my network to my pc. it would be really convinent if this worked so i could just burn the stuff with that aas i often have shows that i record and like to keep...but i wouldnt want them wasting space on my PVR.

one other question... is there pci cards for pcs that support component input? or is there a way to hack the HDTV reciever/pvr to allow me to transfer files on the network? i know there must be a way to do this as i often come accross recorded HDTV files on the internet.

if it didn't work transferring files over the network how do dvd recorders work? could i record stuff to the dvd in mpeg-2 and then copy that and mix it on my pc?

I got my Pioneer DVD recorder with 80gig HardDrive for $1000 last June at Futureshop but you now can get them for around 700 or less with a harddrive. If you don't want a harddrive built in then they start at around 299.

You have a few options, one of the best may be to run DVI directly to your TV, then run component to your A/V receiver. That way you can really do an a/b comparison between the two formats. The Crestron system can switch easily between the two inputs as well which makes things easier. Never any family confusion when it is a single button that you are pressing.

I would be very careful when considering outboard records (DVD or VCR) as HD recorders (BD/HD-DVD) are due out this year. It's a question of how important dumping lower quality S-Video onto a DVD is compared to being able to make a HD copy of the material.... and of course, when HD recorders are available, will they allow you to copy the show to HD. Still many unknowns, but we do know that the best quality input on DVD recorders is S-Video composite... 480i.

thanks...since the system will probably be my one big install in this home and if i uprgrade it will be just components i'm going to make sure to do it right. thus i am going to install crestron audio, and use it to control the home theater room. i still have to decide however if i will add a video switch to send the feed to my upstairs tv. the sole purpose would be for simplicity as i often record stuff on various vcrs and then watch it later on the small tv at night. if i had a video signal running there the best input i could put into it is s-video. if i were to play content through an svideo line running to this tv from the pvr in the basement how would i control what is on the screen from the pvr in the basement?
