Who thinks I should part my ole SONY KX-27 PS1 for an 34” LCD monitor?

My building society offered me the choice to obtain a credit card 2 weeks ago with up to 9 months 0% interest to pay off some of the balance wow, sounds tempting to just say no.

So should I take there offer and then look for the most affordable LCD 34” 1080 that’s going for under £600.00 pounds or should I keep the SONY KX-27 PS1 monitor.

As the technology gets more affordable I haven’t yet decided on the type of manufacture, but after seeing 34” LCD monitors for under £600.00 pounds when you consider a 34” widescreen CRT many years ago would be double that cost.

Decisions, decisions…

If you are willing to take the [substantial] image quality drop, go for the LCD. You might not even care. A lot of people just don't seem to care or take critical notice, or some even prefer the specific image distortion(s) inherant to LCDs.

Personally, I will not touch current generation LCD monitors for movie viewing, and that includes the best I have seen(Sony Bravia XBR). Every couple of months I tend to head out to my local electronics retailers and spend about 20-30 minutes per television, adjusting the image parameter menus for each one using the same program material side by side, attempting to see what differences are easily visible under the best possible adjustment for a particular issue. The cheaper LCDs have washed out vivid color ranges(narrow gamut), and have high contrast(which you can't adjust out, or the image becomes worse) due to technical limitations. The 'high quality' LCDs such as Sharp Aquos and Samsung, etc. have the same problems, but not to the same severity. The best LCDs(Sony Bravia XBR) are not that far from good CRTs or plasmas, but still bad enough that it would bother me greatly.

As for 1080P ..... I would be more interested in getting linear image tone ranges and have a 720P. There is a lot more to image quality than just spatial resolution. Besides, at smaller screen sizes(40" range), you have to be sitting within about 6 feet from the screen to see a substantial difference with images/movies(use as a computer screen is another matter). With a 34", that's probably more like 3.5'-4'.

Thanks mate:)

Hmm, I don’t like the sound of that washed out colour high contrast, sounds like my digital camera on a bad day!

Plasma screens are high cost, I would like to go for LCD, seeing there cheap. Now I know why, “washed out colour high contrast”.

I didn’t see not one single CRT monitor at the Dixion branch in Bournemouth last month, not one! Looks like CRT is slowly phasing out of current production to try and force everyone to buy LCD or Plasma screens.

I will look again at a few LCD screens in the local shops and take DVD along that I’ve viewed on my SONY KX-27 PS1 CRT and see if I can see anything that looks disconcerting about the image to the eye.

CRT is all but dead, despite being the best looking (IMO). "Slim" CRTs were supposed to help revive them, but I don't see that taking off too well. LCD will not give you as good of a picture as a plasma, but that doesn't mean they are not a good choice. If you have the ability to controll light well in the room, they can work quite well. LCDs are cheaper because they are in much higher production than Plasmas. Plasmas are starting to lose ground to LCDs because LCD is aproaching the performance that makes them viable as well as the fact that their cost is coming down which makes them more attractive to the masses.

My next display will likely be a LCD, once LED backlighting hits the market. Currently using a 34" CRT.

Ok mate I should have put a few more options in the voting, but see some are saying get a new one.

I heard on the street that some companies where in the planning of making new CRT flat screens last month, but now I’m stuck between deciding for a LCD flat screen maybe a Plasma, or a one of bargain video projector.

LOL, Only downside is bulb life!:D

I’ll have to see if I can if building society says yes. I mean they gave me debit card with an overdraft limit, so I can’t see them saying? Well I’ll see what happens in the morning.
