Should I change my amp???

Hello all,

This is my first post, yes I am new!!! Please be nice!

I currently own a Sony STR DB940 av receiver hooked up to Morduant Short MS 906 Fronts (Bi Wired), a MS 905 Center and MS904 Rears, and a Paradigm PS1000 sub.

I have had my amp for three years now and I have the option to trade it in. I have never been that happy with stereo reproduction (always seemed a bit harsh) on it so was thinking of getting an Arcam AVR300 receiver.

What I would like to know is, do you think I am wasting my money on replacing my amp with the current speakers that I have or would it be a worth while upgrade? or should I be looking into getting rid of the whole lot and starting again.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Stu

P.S. on a different note I managed to put a small dent on the aluminium tweeter of my center channel whilst removing the cover, is this likely to affect the performance of the overall speaker, it doesnt sound any different to me so far.

I am also using Mordaunt SHort speakers but they are the MS914 front and back and a 905C center plus a B&W ASW600 subwoofer. They are driven by separate amps for the front(stereo acurus A250) and center/surrounds (3-ch acurus A200X3). They were formerly driven by the amps of a 1995 Onkyo flagship receiver the TXSV919THX.

All I can say is that going from receiver to separate amps was an excellent upgrade move for me. The speakers themselves are not as powerful and as transparent as what I've heard from other more expensive speakers, but they exhibit excellent accuracy that is respectable for their price points. I have always suspected that separate amps have better sonic neutrality, transparency and accuracy than those in receivers. My upgrade to the acurus proved it without any doubt. (I actually came from separate Onkyo Integra M506 and P306 prior to going to AV receiver which seemed a lot more convinient and made better sense 8 years ago.) For processor/preamp, I am using the Denon AVD2020 and a Rotel DTS decoder RDA985.

I cannot say that the Arcam receiver you are planning to upgrade with from a Sony will yield better sonics. Judging by the reputation of the name only, I'd say maybe. If your Sony receiver has multi-channel pre-outs, try considering using separate multi-channel power amps. There are excellent ones from Krell, Aragon and Sunfire. Even Arcam and Anthem.

If you can ask the dealer for a home audition of the ARCAM reciever to mate with your existing speaker set-up, better. Or just get a return warranty if what you bought doesn't satisfy. Just my thoughts.

Hello Av Phile,

Thank you for your answer. I think I will buy a separate amp just for music, it is cheaper than swapping in my Sony for an Arcam. I have read some reviews and think I will either get a NAD C352CT or a Cambridge Audio Azur 640A.

So my next question is, what the best way to connect it all up. Obviously front speakers to the new amp. Then should I put all the audio inputs i.e CD Players, Ipod etc into the Nad and leave the DVD and TV to the Sony, then connect a set of pre outs from the Sony into an Input on the NAD i.e. TV.

So then when I am watching a DVD or TV and want to adjust the volume I must do it on both amps I take it so all speakers get adjusted.

Or is there a better way I can do it?

Cheers

i just purchase the new flagship of yamaha dsp-az9 the amplifire,i also get the new multi dvd of denon the a-11..
those two product are very good as a real high end machine.
the only problem is that the i link between the two machines dont seem to work...
is it because of the denon?
i wouldnt like to give up on the denon cause its great in every aspect.
i will if i will know for sure that the i link wont work with the yamaha.
if you all know anything about this issue i would love to know what you all think..

you won't go wrong with the NAD C352CT. I'm enjoying mine with the NAD C542 CD Player and they're a perfect match and a complimentary pair.
