Shopping online for speakers and a receiver...

Hey guys-

I'm a real novice to this audio stuff so bear with me.

I'm currently considering setting up a SMALL home audio system in my studio apartment. I'm not trying to spend more than $200-$250 on a pair speakers and a receiver. I've been doing a lot of shopping around on Amazon and found a nice pair of Sony SS-B3000 Bookshelf Speakers with 8 inch woofer (120 watts) I really like. They're relatively small (I'm not working with much room here) and I've always been satisfied with Sony products. I've heard great things about Polk too but they seem to be a little more out of my price range.

As far as the receiver goes, I'm a little less decisive. I know I don't need a 5.1 channel receiver because I'm not on the prowl for surround sound. Wouldn't a 5.1 receiver be pretty much pointless then? What exactly does channel mean in the first place when it comes to receivers? I found a $100 Sherwood 2-channel 100 watt receiver that looked decent. How would that work with the Sony speakers I'm looking at? Does anyone have any tips for me so that when I'm shopping for speakers and a receiver I know what would be a good match? What are some of the things I should be looking for as far as the technical specs go?

As you can see I'm certainly not trying to put anything fancy together here - I'm on a very tight $200-$250 budget. Does anyone have any budget-minded recommendations for speakers and receivers?

if all you want it stereo , on a 'BUDGET". a $100 100wpc receiver (cheaper on craigslist). and some $150 speakers will do ya fine.

i have just such a system in my garage. it cranks pretty well. my neighbors hate when i am in the garage.
