So I was inspired to put together this thread and include what you can get for a moderate amount of money. If I was going to put together a HTPC this is what I would put in my system.

Case - Antec Fusion Remote Black HTPC Case
PSU - Corsair VX550W 550W
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H
CPU - AMD Athlon II X4 600E
HSF - Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 LP Low Profile HTPC 3 Heatpipe Heatsink
RAM - Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C7 4GB DDR3 2X2GB
HDD - Western Digital WD1001FALS Caviar Black 1TB
BR-ROM Drive - Liteon IHOS104 4X BLU-RAY Reader BD-ROM Drive OEM
Sound card - AuzenTech X-FI Hometheater

Total price: ~ 1000 CDN

I went with a 65W CPU for low thermal output, and I upgraded stock cooling to the freezer 64 LP. That is a tip top of the line sound card which takes up 30% of the cost alone. Although that's really what a HTPC is all about isn't it? That HDD is pretty much the best you can buy with read/write speeds that rival the 300gb velociraptor and costs a third the price for triple the storage. In all honesty if you wanted a pretty beast gaming rig all you would have to do is buy a good video card and this system would perform very well in todays most demanding games. You could save some money by going with a less expensive case, but the Antec Fusion really is the best looking HTPC case ever made. You're definitely going to want to replace the stock fans that come with it to some Noctua 120mm ones for near silent operation.

So if you want to know what you can build for 1000 bucks, this would be it.

I was thinking of a sound card that has 7.1 analog outputs like the Auzentech X-FI Prelude 7.1 so that SHOCK could use the HTPC as a pre-pro and hook it directly to his external amps.:D

http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/audio/auzentech_x-fi_prelude_7_1_sound_card/3

Or the Asus Sound Card w/ TrueHD/DTS-HD + 7.1 Analog Output:

Unfortunately the first card won't output the new audio formats over it's analog outputs, and the Asus card requires two PCI-E 1x slots, which few mATX motherboards support.

Geez, you expect a miracle or something?:D

Why do you have to get a mATX instead of a ATX MB?

Because you can't get a good HTPC case that will fit an ATX motherboard.
Well, isn't that kind of like an oxymoron?:D

If it's a "GOOD" HTPC case, it should fit any kind of motherboard.:D

Otherwise, it would be THAT good.:D

Have you seen that Antec Fusion? The thing looks better than any of the equipment I own.

I also don't know if you can actually get a HTPC case that will fit a ATX motherboard. I'd have to check but I would venture a guess there aren't that many options.

Wow. It seems like MOST of the HTPC cases I've seen support standard ATX motherboards.

Take both of mine for example.:D They're about 9" high, 17" wide, & 18" deep. And, of course, both my motherboards are ATX.

My other unused (in closet) Thermaltake Mozart case also supports standard ATX.

I'm gonna agree with everyone else on here and tell you to get an ATX motherboard with a compatable HTPC case.

A big case just doesn't work for me as a true HTPC. I think you all be crazy!

If its the size of a consumer audio/video equipment, then what wrongs? If you build it right to replace your pre/pro avr whats wrong with that size? You know that they have room corrections plugins available? If its a HTPC step down the cpu a bit, and spend the extra cash towards controllers for remote control solutions. ahhhh the possibilities:D

And it accomodates a full size ATX board.

I'm actually using my Mozart case to build another HTPC for my bedroom.:D

But this time, I went a lot cheaper and got a $50 micro-ATX board from Best Buy.

I had a $100 Best Buy gift card. So I spent that on a $50 MSI mATX board + some generic $45 2GB RAM.

I already have other spare parts (Sapphire ATI 4850 card, MSI PSU, LiteOn BD-ROM, & 160GB Seagate Barracuda HDD, WiFi PCI card, 120mm SilverStone fan), so this one is not costing me much $$ out of my pocket.:D

So I guess if people wanted a less expensive motherboard, a micro-ATX is fine. Otherwise, I would just go with a full-size motherboard.
