Sheryl Crow - The Globe Sessions Review

I’m always happy to let my 7.1 setup get the full workout. Like most people, I’ve heard most, if not all, of Sheryl Crow’s popular releases, seen some performances on TV, and have been generally impressed with her talent. This album, however,&nbsp;is a mishmash in terms of Audio Quality. The saving grace was the quality of Sheryl Crow’s voice on most of the tracks (especially track 7). Her smoky, melodic voice is one of my favorites. I just wish the rest of the audio was up to the task. <A href="http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avsoftware/dvd-audio/SherylCrowGlobeSessions.php"><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Read on</FONT></A><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"> for more...</FONT></P><P><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">[</FONT><A href="http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avsoftware/dvd-audio/SherylCrowGlobeSessions.php"><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Read the Review</FONT></A><FONT face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">]</P>

Good review Clint. They have this one at my local Borders and I was thinking about picking it up. I've only recently purchased a universal player and haven't had the chance to explore multi channel very much. I guess I'll pass on Sheryl's offering and go for the DVD-A of Big Head Todd and the Monsters' Crimes of Passion. I couldn't make up my mind between the two when I was there yesterday.

Just as a P.S.: Borders doesn't have a very strong selection of DVD-A or SACD: About a total of 50 titles and that's all categories.

Due to the massive airplay of "The First Cut is The Deepest", "All I Wanna Do" and "Picture", I can no longer listen to Sheryl Crow. 6.1 or not. Sorry. Like most of the titles available on SACD and DVD-A, I won't waste my money or time upgrading just to experience it in surround. You buy it, listen to it, say "Wow, that sounds a little better than the CD I have" (that's sat there for 5 years since you played it last), and you never listen to it again. I, like most audiophiles, am desperate for new titles, or even more quality older recordings in high res formats.

Sheryl Crow's music is boring. That's about the only word I can think of. Lacks originality and creativity. This review, although well written, does not convince me to purchase this title. Nor any old Steely Dan, or Elton John, or a very weak Queen The Game DVD A.

Let's face it. High res formats are not catching on unfortunately. If Sheryl Crow "The Globe Sessions" is getting this or any attention, we have to realize that.

I like Sheryl Crow quite a bit, and although I didn't think that her version of "First Cut" added anything to the Rod Stewart track, I still thought it was enjoyable enough. (For that matter, I like the basic melody of this song, but always thought that Stewart's cut was just a little too slick for my tastes. If he had recorded it back in his Mercury Records years it would have been better.)

I saw Crow live a couple of years ago, when she was the opening act for the Stones (previous tour). She was an effective opening act for them, and also came back out to duet with Mick on Honky Tonk Women. (Although she looked a little bit uncomfortable when Mick wanted to "grind" with her between verses.) Her band rocks pretty well - in general she's more suited to rock than to ballads.

Sorry to disagree with the review. I happen to really like it.

Is it the best thing since sliced toast? No.....

Still, it's more than playable.

No need to be sorry! Though a 2 stars is by no means a high rating, as taken from the review:

A score of 2 can be considered to be recommended but with reservations. Some may still enjoy the product, but most will either not care for it or outright despise it.
I guess that would put you in the "some" category. :) The key is that when I review an album, it is solely on the Audio Quality and Surround Implementation. What is not factored in is how much the music "agrees" with the listener. If you are a Crow fan, or a fan of her type of music, many of the things that contributed to the lower rating may not bother you as much. I'm glad you enjoy it and I'm sure you are not the only one.
