Just purchased my 2nd Sherwood Newcastle R-972 for my 2nd room, have the 1st about 1 1/2 years. With the new one playing a blu-ray only plays stereo not surround using hdmi. Same brand player, so I took the player and hdmifrom the first and connected it to the 2nd still only stereo while it played surround on the 1st. Noticed when first starting the new one the on screen menu froze so I shut it off and unplugged then the menu worked, doing trinnov it did not recognize the right front and left surround as no sound out of them but redid trinnov and then it worked. Tried different hdmi inputs, does surround with satellite hdmi input. The instruction manual is lacking. Which amp setting to use on 2nd bi-amp, surround back, on 1st 7 speakers on 2nd 5 speakers. Wonder if my 2nd is defective?

I have never seen this problem with any R-972. Please check the settings on your blu-ray player. It should be set to bit-stream.

Also, I had a "similar" problem with Monster's U this past weekend. The movie played in 2 channel. I finally discovered that Sony's easy play system optimized HDMI playback and sound for use directly into a stereo TV. I finally found the menu settings needed to restore multi-channel.

For your other questions, it is always recommend to reset the receiver before running any calibrations.

I haven't used bi-amp or power second zone in several years, but I don't recall any setup issues. Both these functions should be readily accessible via the on-screen menus.

Spoke with Sherwood support, very pleasant and knowledgable. Feels the HDMI board and supply for inputs 2,3,4 are a problem, I switched the dvd to 1 perfect. He explained that hdmi board input 1 is a separate board and supply whereas input 2,3,4 share the same board and supply. He said to send it for an exchange where I got it brand new 2 days ago but that is not an option as they will not do an exchange only refund and for me to send it in and pay for shipping, they said they would pay shipping if they found something wrong but the impression I got they would find nothing wrong even if it is. Wanted an exchange not a refund. They blamed everything on the cables even though I used the same dvd and cables as on my other 972 to test. The reason I feel and support did as now the satellite on 2, 3, or 4 is acting weird. Very unhappy with the dealers response.
