Seems like this company has never made anything worth purchasing... seems like that a lot of you guys think they are one of the top manufacturers of TV's now. Is this true and how long has this been going on? Thanks from a newb

Sharp has built its reputation based on the ratings in Consumer Reports. They've always gotten pretty decent reviews there, as a whole.

IMO, their CRT's have always been a bit lackluster and there's no way you can compare a sharp to a panasonic or sony within this realm. But they've always built a very dependable set with great features and value.

Their LCD screens, on the other hand, are truly superb. They've always been highly vested in LCD technology. As stupid as it sounds, they were the first to employ lcd screens in camcorders (remember the old sharp viewcams with the lcd screens and NO viewfinder; and Wayne Gretzkey as the star of their commercials  ) Anyways, back on topic... They make great lcd screen televisions, but are also relatively expensive when compared to other brands like samsung. Just my $.02.

I've heard good things about the new Sharp DLP sets and was able to see one at Best Buy. It was quite impressive. I've never been impressed by their CRT's.

The only Sharp product I have owned is my Sharp VCR. It's 10 years old now but still works great. It is used almost daily (I need a DVR). It's more feature rich than just about any VCR I could buy today and does something that I haven't seen any others do... The clock sets itself. :)

I've never been thrilled with Sharp's engineering, but they have always been the gold standard for LCD displays. When Sony came out (finally) with LCDs, their goal was to meet the level of quality that Sharp had already established as a benchmark.

That's a pretty telling sign of the quality of their LCDs - which are a bit pricey.

I have actually had more experience with their front projectors though which have always been excellently reviewed and have performed very well as one of the higher priced models. I'm not sure they are better than the similarly priced competition, but they definitely hold their own.

From Sharp minds come Sharp products...

Lord knows how old this set is. It's in my sons room. Perfect for cartoons and Thomas videos.
