Sharp Electronics has announced it will release its first Blu-ray disc player in time for the holiday season.

Dubbed the BD-HP205, thus far Sharp has released only preliminary specs for the deck, which is due by late fall.

Expect 1080p output capability at both 24fps and 60fps, plus in-board Dolby TrueHD decoding.

The player is also slated to fully support HDMI v1.3, and includes analog 5.1 outputs as well.

Sharp is also touting a new 'Quick Start' feature, which will load a disc mere seconds after being inserted into the tray. This is likely to be viewed as a welcome addition by early adopters, as currently load times on Blu-ray (and HD DVD) players tend to be frustratingly slow.

The manufacturer has not yet announced an exact street or pricing for the BD-HP205, but we'll keep you posted. Watch this space!

(that is post #6000 for me :) Still a couch tater.... )

I have a question. Do any hddvd or blu ray players support dvd-audio or sacd?

The PS3 does SACD, not sure about other players. Since BD is Sony, I would imagine no BD players will do DVD-A. I am not sure if any HD-DVD players can do either of them either, but I don't recall hearing that any could.

Some days I am on here and others I am too busy to even look. This is a slow week due to the holiday...

Thats Garbage. So whats the use of hdmi 1.3 supporting dvd audio and sacd if the players dont support dvd audio.
Because universal players (non-HD) still support both SACD and DVD-Audio via HDMI 1.2 not 1.3.

The real reason is because HD audio is an after thought to the majority of the population. Most people who buy HD discs probably don't even realize part of the HD spec is audio and thats why they listen to it on their blose or HTiB systems so it makes no sense for the majority of these companies to add SACD and DVD-A support. Besides Sony probably would try to stop the HD-DVD camp from getting SACD support and since Sony is involved in SACD creation DVD-A is their competitors and they wouldn't want to help them by supporting it. Another thing to note is SACD support in the PS3 was an after thought added most likely to try and boost the format a little.

I suspect that the vast majority of people who have bought HD DVD players (or BD for that matter) so far do not use Bose or HTiB setups. That won't happen until the players get under $100.

Ps3 is a great selling Blu-ray player and the majority of the people who have one seem to want a great screen and little boxes to go with it. Another thing to think about is Blose systems are far from cheap they might have been upsold to the newest and latest HD player along with it. I am pretty sure thats what they tried to do to Dina on the AVRant podcast when she went to Best Buy. Bose and Blu-ray together.

I don't think there is support for DVD-A and SACD really because I expect they will simply switch over to lossless audio, something that is supported by both players. There is already one HD-Audio disc out on HD-DVD.

So I guess they are trying to slowly kill dvd audio?

Sony did not support DVD-A because it is competing technology as they are backers of SACD so yes, Sony would probably like it dead. Both formats don't really do well though, they are more niche products.

PS3 supports SACD through the HDMI connection only. There is no 5.1 analog connection on the PS3.
The unit does have stereo analog out, so you can do 2ch SACD without HDMI, you just can't get multichannel SACD via analog.

Any idea on pricing yet? Would like to move my PS3 to another room.
