Anyone have this TV? How are the Sharp LCDs? I'm going to be buying a new TV pretty soon, and I'm just kind of waiting for the holiday deals. This is the TV I have been watching for a while though...

Pre-Pro is an Onkyo Professional, the source for blu-rays is a Playstation 3. I was going to grab a stand alone blu-ray player but I'm too impatient for those things to load.

Never really been a fan of Sharp LCD's as it's always hit and miss with them when it comes to banding. IMO if you are looking for a 52" LCD Samsung 600 and 700 series along with Sony W4100 and Z4100 are the way to go. If you have more cash to burn then I would be looking into the Samsung 800 series and Sony XBR's.

Also if you don't mind checking out plasmas the new Panasonic 800 series with THX mode are very good as well. From what I have seen the blacks with THX mode are just as good as the Kuro Elites.

I will take a look at those.

Trouble I have been having is I can't tell if its a hit or miss because the source and settings are always set differently on showroom TVs. It makes TV shopping almost useless for me.

The 600 and 700 Samsungs are about the price of the Sharp 52s?

Samsung 52A650 - $2200

Samsung 52A750 - $2700

The Samsung 52A850 right now is $50 more than the 750 which makes it a damn good deal. The 850 black levels are extremely good for an LCD.

I've been paying a little attention to TVs in this range because I'd like one (even though it's not in the budget). I've I were to buy now, I'd look for a good deal on Samsung, Sony or Toshiba Regza. If you plan to keep this TV for a long time, I'd recommend getting the one with the best picture you can afford.

Today I got my new Samsung 52A650. I spent a good 6 months following some foruns (AVForuns) and decided for the sammy. For the price it was the best I could find (and my wife loves the design). I'm still making some adjustments but I've seen Happy Feet hddvd (CG animation is the best to show off a tv) and Fighter Pilot (also hddvd). I'm delighted so far :D

I could not "test" any TV in a store because the stores are too bright, this is what makes the forums important, you can check what others are seeing in the dark.

Just remember there's no such thing as a perfect TV. All TVs have faults, just choose one that makes you happy ;) Don't expect perfection.

Does that one have the glossy screen?

i have a samsung 40'' 650 series and i love it. buying a stand alone blu-ray player is pointless unless your looking for something with multichannel outputs. Id stick with the ps3

From what I've seen the sharps have the best picture quality. I'm wondering about this banding issue. Of course I am looking in the 42" range so maybe they don't have the same issues.

I'm going to look at the Samsung 6 series. The 7's are starting to get a bit pricey, but, we'll see if I get a bonus this year haha, then maybe I'd go for it. Sometimes I can get Sharp at a better deal, so, that's still in the running but it sounds like the Samsungs are the better way to go... TVs have gotten so good now I can't even tell half the time which is better because they all still look amazing to me. The novelty of blu-ray quality hasn't really worn off me yet.

What is banding? Wikipedia isn't doing too good of a job at explaining it. It sounds like bad banding is like where you can see uneven gradients instead of smooth transitions?

I purchased the LN52A650 a couple of days ago and it's still being shipped to me. The picture quality and black levels were amazing. The only displays that bested it were the Pioneer Kuros. This is all subjective and my viewing comparisons were in a big box store. I wish they would perform ISF calibrations on all displays in the store and hide the remotes.
