Sharp HDTV/Yamaha DVD player HDMI incompatability?

Yamaha HTR-6090 receiver
Sharp LC-32D43U TV
Yamaha DV-S5950 DVD player

HDMI from receiver to TV works fine except when I try HDMI out from the DVD player, then nothing and TV shows "incompatible HDMI signal error"
HDMI out from DVD player directly into TV shows occasional flashes of picture, but mostly nothing

I took the DVD player back to Best Buy, swapped it for a new one, and found that it did the same thing. Took the player back to Best Buy and plugged it into their setup in Magnolia store, and it worked great.

I've spent at least an hour on the phone with both Yamaha and Sharp tech support and they don't have any idea what is going on.

Thanks for any ideas...

Need to know what version of HDMI your TV has as that is most likely the problem - the player's version is probably newer and the TV is likely not HDCP compliant - if that is the case it won't work.

HDMI versions

All components are brand new, so this shouldn't be an issue. For the receiver -
HTR-6090 - manual mentions HDMI 1.2a. The DVD player and TV manuals don't say anything at all about HDMI version, and so far I haven't been able to find anything on company web sites either. I'll keep looking...
