shadows on rear projection display?

I have some very faint lines on my projection screen, almost like a hair is on the lamp or something ands last night I noticed what looked to be a web or something. With rear projection CRTs is there a safe way to open them up and dust the inside or should that be something left to a professional?

Depends on your particular model, your skill level, and the size of your cojones.

Instructions for various models have been posted here and there on the 'net. Try searching forums at http://www.keohi.com/keohihdtv/index.htm or http://www.avsforum.com/

If you crack the case, don't look at the lamp/lens assembly, though. A hair down there probably won't show up as a defined shadow. Think of it the way Mercury doesn't cast a shadow on the Earth - it's too close to the source.

If it's actually a shadow from a foreign object, that object is probably either on the mirror or on the inside of the screen.

(This will almost certainly void your warranty, so take that into consideration before soldiering on.)

Depending on the age and warranty of your set, you may be able to have it serviced. A friend of mine went through 2 replacements of the mirror in his LCD RP because of dust circles collecting around the mounts. Eventually the store gave him credit to buy up to a different model because he didn't want the continuous 3-month service cycle. (And neither did the store, apparently.)
