The room my 5.1 home theater is in is a 14'x25' rectangle. i use one half of the (Rectangular Room) for my setup. That gives me 3 walls and leaves a (no wall) empty space.
Should the empty space be behind my rear channel speakers or to the side?

Thanks

It may be a matter of semantics and we may be saying the same thing, but I'd rather have the missing fourth wall behind the main viewing area and the surround speakers on the sides of the main viewing area. This presupposes that the monitor and front three speakers are on the wall opposite the missing wall.

+1. If you have the open area to your left or right, your imaging will be asymmetric which will be very noticeable. Further the speakers on one side will have different boundary interactions than the other, which will skew the frequency response of the speakers on either side.
