what is the difference between matrixed, non-matrixed, and DPLiix?
Which will sound better?

Thanks

Thanks, but they really don't answer my question. Which is how is the sound different when I have my SB speakers set to matrixed or non matrixed (how is the sound processed differently, what do I hear?) or if I let the DPL decide what goes to the rear speakers?

I tried different setting and I haven't been able to notice any difference exept sometimes the DPL will send the nothing to my surrounds and the full signal to my surround backs.

What is matrixed?

Strange...

Strange man...

Each and every DSP setting on my Pioneer VSX-1014TX makes an obviously noticeable difference as I switch from one to the other. Perhaps your Denon's DSP circuit is very (very) subtle, or maybe the speakers are not wired correctly (?).

…attempts to verbally describe the ‘sound’ of different matrix formats, but its tough to describe - one sort of “has to be there”.

Last shot at it: The Webopedia defination for Matrixed:

Matrixed:

In audio and sound terms, matrixed describes a technique in which multichannels are blended together and stored.

Contrast with discrete where channels are individually stored

EDIT:
PS: Ok, really - last shot on an explanation of "how it sounds":
