I am trying to set a new Yamaha rx-v573 receiver. I am connecting a Panasonic SA-Ht940 DVD player surround sound system. The Panasonic has rear wireless speakers and wired fronts, center and subwoofer. I rewired the fronts to the receiver. The receiver and dvd player are connected through a hdmi cable. My issue is when I turn on a DVD only the rear wireless speakers work not the wired speakers going to the receiver. Now when I watch TV the front speakers do work (dvd player is not on). Any thoughts on what i am doing wrong?

Hi, Skelly, and welcome to the forum!

Based on your description, I think that the most likely reason is that you need to set up the Panasonic to output audio from the HDMI port. You can check out page 24 of the owner's manual (PDF version linked here) for how to do that. The manual mentions it being two-channel audio when connected to a TV, but hopefully it will output the full audio track.

You'll also need to make sure that the Yamaha receiver is set up to use the HDMI input that you have connected with the input source that you're using for the DVD player.

I'm not sure that you're going to get everything that you want, though, but I haven't read through the Panasonic manual much. I say that because if the Panasonic is setup to output audio over HDMI, it probably won't play audio through any of the speakers still connected to it.

Logitech Harmony is about as idiot proof as you can get (I have one ) and works for most people.
If you have more complex controlling to be done another brand would likely be a better bet. But I will let other people advise on complex remoting!

Is this a replacement remote for the Panasonic? If so, before spending much money on a remote, I'd say seriously consider just getting a new disc player and hooking up all of the speakers to your new Yamaha. I believe that you could use the Panasonic as an amp for the sub for now, connecting the subwoofer output on the Yamaha to a y-splitter and then connecting that to one of the RCA inputs on the Panasonic. Just adjust the volume on the Panasonic to set the subwoofer main volume, then adjust the subwoofer level on the Yamaha. Did that make sense at all?

Can I run sound for my living room through a sound bar connected to my yamaha receiver? I have tried optical and hdmi but I'm not getting any sound out of the soundbar. Thoughts?
