I'm having trouble setting up my 3806. I have a Scientific Atlanta cable box (non HD) and an Oppo DVD player. I want to connect the cable box to the 3806 using S-video cable (to use the analog to HDMI conversion) and the Oppo via the HDMI input and then use the 3806 HDMI output to my TV. However, I can only get the DVD output but not the cable output. What am I doing wrong? How should I connect the cable to the 3806 and set it up so it'll work? Thanks.

Are you getting anything at all from the cable box- audio? video?
If you are not getting video, you might go through the setup menu at the receiver and make sure all the video conversions are turned on.
If you are sending the cable box audio through a coaxial or optical cable, you might check the digital audio input assignments at the receiver to make sure you have the correct input assigned to the cable box.

The 3806 does not do analog to HDMI video conversion. You will need to use component video cables for up conversion from your S-Video jack.

Am I missing something here?
On my Denon 3806, I've got an S-video cable connected to the receiver input for my dvd player with a HDMI cable out to the TV. The video from the dvd player appears just fine.
Is that what you mean by analog conversion?
Now it is true you cannot down convert from HDMI. If you have a HDMI cable going into the receiver, you have to have a HDMI cable out. You can't have a HDMI cable going in and a component video cable going out.
HDMI video will not down convert to component video.

The Denon 3806 will do Analog to HDMI video conversion. This is taken directly from their webpage (http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/623.asp):

Video Conversion – Composite to S-Video to Component

I stand corrected. I must be losing my mind but I was almost positive it wouldn't do it.

What TV are you hooking up to? Will it accept a 480i HDMI signal?

Scaling maybe?

You might have been thinking about de-interlacing or scaling. While the Denon 3806 will do switching between those cable types, it won't scale the signal to anything higher than it was input as.
