Setup help - very frustrated.

I've posted here and at AVS as well - looking for a hand please. I’m a relative newbie, frustrated beyond belief. I just purchased a Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver, which sounds great. I’m having trouble connecting it to my system, and am asking for help.

Before the receiver, I had the DVR setup with an HDMI connection, and the DVD through coax, using the TV as a switch to choose what input I wanted. I simply used the TV speakers, but now have a 5.1 system setup.

I then setup the DVR through the receiver using the HDMI, and got nothing. No picture when the receiver input was set on cable/sat, nada. I start rolling through inputs, all of a sudden it displayed cable for a second then told me that the DVR won’t accept the HDMI, switch to coax. I did that, I still got no picture or sound. The DVD player would originally show and play correctly, but that has stopped, and now comes on intermittently.

Is there a simple schematic that I can refer to, I know I have to be doing something wrong. I’ve been extra good, as I’m not patient. I’ve read each of the manuals, the connections are good and proper (I believe), but I know I’m missing something.

My setup for reference if you need it -

Hitachi HDT79 42” plasma
Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver
Motorola DCT 6416 III DVR/set top box
Hitachi DVD player (non HDMI)

Who is your cable provider? I know Comcast Motorola cable boxes had an issue with HDMI through receivers. I believe they have released a software update.

Also, have you assigned the specific HDMI input to the input you want to use?

Metrocast cable, who I think is awful. I bailed out on the HDMI input connection when it said it wasn't compatible, and to use component cables. That aside, I still get no picture through receiver. I am still using an HDMI out.

I dont know much about the Yamaha reciever, BUT you probably have to tell the reciever that the cable/sat input is comming from Componet 1 or wherever its hooked up.

Ah, ok, I would imagine that I'd have to do that with each component I hook up to it?

Now to figure out HOW to do that lol.

You should be able to do it in the setup menu on the reciever. And you should only have to do it for Componet, HDMI, and for youre Optical and or Coax digital inputs. The manual should help with exactly how to go about doing all that. Its easier than it sounds.

I'm using a Motorola 6416 and have no issues passing HDMI through the receiver. You might want to retry the HDMI setup and adjust the settings in the receiver.
