setup for classical

I'm looking for a 2ch setup to be used in a living room for mainly listening to classical music. Budget is $200-400 for the amp/receiver. I do not have speakers picked out yet. The living room area is fairly open - connected with the dining and kitchen, the the ceiling is pretty high.

I'm guessing I'd like to used CDs as well as stream music from a computer.

Suggestions? help? AV receiver vs standalone amp?

Thanks!

so 300-600 for speaker and 200/400 for amp? So your top budget is up to $1000? If so, now we're cooking with gas... you could certainly find decent 2.0 setup for that

wow that sherwood is really a steal!. Will I need a separate equalizer? What if I wanted to hook up two more speakers in another room to the same system?

Then what about streaming music from multiple laptops? is that possible with a squeezebox?

Thanks!

The SB Touch has a better dac than the SB duet and I would get the Touch. I'm fairly certain you can stream from multiple devices to the Touch but you can post your questions on the logitech forums; they're good and pretty active. The SQ using the RCA output from the Touch is very good; that plus the ease of use makes it a better choice, I think, than a CD player for your set-up. I use mine that way and listen to a lot of classical music. It's really easy to set up playlists and to tweak it.

Where do you live? A quick Craigslist search of the nearest big city may yield good results.

washington DC area.

So, if in the future I want to connect another set of speakers in another room, what kind of receiver/amp do I need to look for?

Thanks!

Unless you want remote control, I'd be looking for a "vintage" stereo receiver or amp with speaker A/B terminals. Not as difficult task and these can be founf for a reasonable price.

Sherwood offers, NIB a model RX-4105 for about $100, or less if you do a search on Amazon but you won't be able to use a separate equalizer.

That way, you'll have more $$ to devote on speakers.

well... the other room I'd like to setup speakers in the future - I don't think I'd be able to get an electrical plug nearby - though the speaker wires are already in the walls - so for that particular room, I'd like to say non-powered speakers would be better.

since people seem to be recommending sherwood - how about something like this?

http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=252-120

That would allow me to hook up two sets of speakers in 2 different rooms to the same receiver right?
