setup for classical

I searched through the forum, and found 1-2 threads relating to equipment for classical music enjoyment, unfortunately those threads were 3+ years old, and I didn't want to resurrect them - so lets start anew!

I'm looking for a 2ch setup to be used in a living room for mainly listening to classical music. Budget is $300-600 for the speakers. Can do floor or bookshelf. The living room area is fairly open - connected with the dining and kitchen, the the ceiling is pretty high.

I'm guessing I'd like to used CDs as well as stream music from a computer.

Suggestions? help?

Thanks!

$600 for speakers alone? Do you already have amp/receiver? Are you open do to some DIY??

Stream the music, lose the CD player

If you get something like this, http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-930-000090-Squeezebox-Touch/dp/B002LARRDA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1307335814&sr=8-1, or this, http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Squeezebox-Wi-Fi-Internet-Radio/dp/B0013IWYHU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1307335814&sr=8-2, you will not need a CD player. Just rip all your music to your computer, and play the music via one of these streamers. Either one sounds great for classical or anything else you want to listen to.

so are these speakers pretty directional? will I have to rotate the speakers to listen in the kitchen? will they be sufficient for the sound to fill a large room with high ceilings?

Thanks!

Sometimes you have to compromise, with the budget you have.

lol yes, i know, audio equipment has no price ceilings haha. Well, what about adding another set of speakers in the future, that point in a different direction? would that mess up the acoustics?

For casual listening - you can do lots of things. For serious listening,
a proper set up in the living room is best. If you want to do some
casual listening in the kitchen - then do a pair of small speakers, in
the kitchen area.

You are asking a lot for the money and the space you want this work in. Speakers.......... used Klipsch Heresy II are in your price range and they do not require a power to enjoy them. So many good units etc to pick from. Don't get in a rush to buy. Look around on Ebay etc. Everyone will have a different "Favorite":) Good Hunting.

not in a hurry :) gosh those Klipsch Heresy II speakers have been around for a while huh. I guess quality speakers last a long time :) definitely an option.

So will all these speakers you guys suggested have different 'dispersion' (I don't know if that's the right word) - will some be more directional then others? what would it take to fill out a room more? I suppose I should go test some speakers out with classical music - but besides doing that, is there a way to tell with specs, what speaker set 'should' sound better for classical music?

Thanks!

You asked what speakers play classic music. Classic;) Heresy II speakers that do not need a huge amp:) asking which one's sound "Best" for classic misic will get you a lot of different answers. It comes down to what sounds good to YOU. Good Hunting.
