Power is up FM tuner is working with sound coming out but cannot figure out how to direct TV sound through yamaha system instead of TV.
Have LG70 Television with ATT u-Verse DVR cable Box. Bought an optical cable for it as was suggested but how do I hook up the cable. Through TV optical or through cable box optical. Sorry if this sounds stupid but i cannot get any sound. Would appreiciate any advice.

Welcome to the forum!

Connecting either the TV or the cable box to the Yamaha should work fine.

Connect the optical cable to the output (on either the TV or cable box) and plug it into the optical input jack on the Yamaha. In order to listen to that source, you'll need to (a) have the source powered on and not muted and (b) select "Input 1" on the Yamaha.

If you're still having trouble, please let us know and we'll work through this with you.

Still no sound. I tried both Tv and cable box connection. Is there something I need to do in the TV menu settings. Mute is off and i was on input 1.

No worries - we'll get this set up for you!

According to the TV's owner's manual on page 47, you need to:
Set the “TV Speaker option - Off” in the AUDIO menu.

To do that, check out page 93 of the owner's manual.

Still nothing. I am going to test the optical cable and then take the system back to have them test it at the store. The optical input may be bad. I have read reviews and someone else had this problem. Thanks for your input and kind help. It is appreiciated.

No problem, and best of luck! Sorry that I wasn't able to get that working for you.

One other thing comes to mind. The optical output on the TV might be affected by the volume setting on the TV itself, so try turning up the volume (make sure that the speakers are off, as mentioned before) and see if that helps at all. The TV volume might just be turned down so low that you can't hear it.

Something that I thought of this morning - make sure that the connectors on your optical cable don't still have the protective plastic "caps" on the ends. Some cables come with a plastic sheath (which would come off easily) over the tip portion of the end connector.

You know, I feel like an idiot. That was exactly what my problem was. The little plastic caps were still on the cable. Thanks for thinking about that. We need more deep thinkers in our world. Maybe you should run for office. thanks again.

One more question. Do you think it would be better to connect through the TV or the U-Verse Box. What are the pro's and con's. Hey thanks again.

Cool. I'm glad that it was something easy to fix like that and not something wrong with the unit itself. No reason to feel like an idiot! Plenty of people have done that, I'm sure - I don't think that I've seen a package for those cables yet that says to take those caps off.

There aren't any real pros or cons that come to mind, but I'm not familiar with either your TV or that cable box. If you always watch TV using that box, then I'd say hook the box up to the Yamaha - might as well have a direct feed. You could always try both and see if there's a difference, though.
