I just got my first SVS (PC12-NSD) and I'm really happy with the upgrade. What is the best way to adjust the gain other than by ear?

Second question; Is an expensive rca cable really necessary for sending a signal to a sub? To me, I think people over spend on this particular item but what do I know, that's why I'm asking.

Probably best way to adjust your sub gain is using build-in audio correction in your AVR if you have, if you have audyssey system - Read "Official audyssey thread" http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=14456895#post14456895
Option b: is to get Radioshack Analog SPL meter (typically less than $50)
Option c: is to get high quality mic like Behringer/Dayton Measuring mic, but you'd have to get mic-preamp to use ether as they require ballanced/phantom power and RoomEQ Wizard software form http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/

About cables: Any 75 Ohm coaxial RCA cable will do, monoprice should these starting from couple of bucks..
