Just got a Denon 3805. Read the review of it here. There was mention that you have to set the crossover frequency before running the auto set up function.

I'm confused. What exactly does this mean? Each speaker has a different crossover setting. So how (and why) does one set a crossover freq. for the entire system? I thought the idea was to set it in the 3805 for each speaker in the setup function but it does not seem possible to do this.

Thanks for any help.

The crossover frequency it is talking about is the frequency for bass management. Bass management redirects bass frequencies to the speakers best suited for handling it. It is not related to the crossover point of your speakers - that point is where the speaker itself separates the lows and highs from any signal it receives.

If you set the crossover frequency to 80Hz and tell the receiver you have a subwoofer, then any frequencies below 80Hz that would normally go to a speaker that is designated 'small' in the setup will get redirected to the subwoofer. Any speakers designated 'large' will get the full frequency range regardless of whether you have a subwoofer or not.

I think they want you to set the cross-over that is physically located on your subwoofer to the maximum it will allow (probably 150 or 200 Hz). That will let the receiver electronically set whatever value it wants without the sub-crossover getting in the way.

If your sub was set to 60, for example, and the receiver was trying to set it to 90, you would be sending the sub all the stuff below 90, but the sub would be ignoring the stuff between 60 and 90. You would end up with a "hole" in your sound.

The auto set-up for the 3805 should then check all the speakers for sound and match up the signal the 3805 sends to the speakers to the room you have the system in.
