Service Plan Telemarketing Call

Hi,
I just got a call from DTE (Detroit Edison, the local power company) and they offered me a service plan that could cover up to seven appliances in my house in case 'something happened to them'. She starts listing off some appliances like the furnace, AC, fridge, washer/dryer, etc... Of course the whole time you know I'm thinking "Forget the fridge, I need my stereo covered!";)

I think this website is starting to do things to me....Is it bad to consider your A/V equipment before appliances that provide heat, a place to store food, the ability to wash your clothes,...........:D

I thought the members might appreciate that story and to know that I have now been completely turned to the dark side of A/V.

There are a few companies that offer home warranties and when I bought my house a few years ago the sellers paid for one for me as part of the deal. It cost them $500.

Less than a year later, the igniter on my furnace stopped working and I called for service. You have to pay a $60 'trip charge'. The repair guy came out and replaced the part and told me the part would be about $180 if I did not have the warranty coverage.

Now had *I* paid for the warranty, I'd be losing money. $500 + $60 trip charge = $560 to cover a $180 repair. Nothing else has had any problems since. Skip the insurance - just like A/V warranties the probability of having a problem is low and if you do have a problem you can pay to fix it yourself for a lot less than the sum of all the insurance costs over the years before something does break.

Hi,
Oh, I did not buy the plan. I just thought it was funny that my first thought turned to protecting my A/V equipment rather than my other home appliances.

Home appliances are cheap and readily available anywhere. A good stereo cxan take months to assemble.

I get the same stupid calls from DTE every so often, its hard to get em to shut up long enough to tell them your not interested, ive asked twice to be taken off their call list.

Now my neighborhood has morons going door to door trying to get me to switch phone service, mostly on weekends too.
