Personal information from at least 1.29 million Sega customers was stolen from the Japanese gaming company's database, Sega said Sunday.

Sega Pass, operated by Sega Europe Limited, was illegally accessed on Friday and customers' personal information including e-mail addresses, date of birth as well as passwords, was stolen, Sega said in a statement.

The company said it stopped the service as soon as it confirmed the illegal access.

Impacted customers were contacted and received an apology by e-mail, the company stated, adding that the stolen database did not include credit card numbers.
