Just wanted to know if you guys think a onkyo TX-DX797 is a good AV receiver. What are your user opinions pro's and con. Is it of good quality. I might be able to get a used one for about 6 to 700. is it worth even looking at and is this asking price with in reason.

Thanks for your time

Let me see if I have this right.. somebody wants $600-700 for a USED TX-DS797? If they expect you to actually pay that, they are playing you for a sucker. The 797 is several years old, quite outdated, and cost around $799 when it was new. I'd say real market value on it is $350 at most.

Thanks 4 tha reply! Yea I think your right, cause he probably look at me and imagine my head being a huge lolly pop with sucker written on it.

Anyway do you think I should save up some more and get the outlaw combo 990/7125 IIRC.

After having an Integra (Onkyo high end) receiver fail, and going threw HELL to get them to replace it under warranty, I'd avoid Onkyo or Integra at all cost. I'd run away from any used product with their name on it.

For the same money, you could possibly find a Yamaha RXV-1500 or RXV-2500 since the new models just came out. These would be a far better purchase than the 797.

You've chosen wisely to ask and check this board before buying. Good luck in your future purchase.

So one or a handful of people have had issues with their Onkyo and it would be wise to avoid them? Unless there is a repeated pattern of early failure over many model years and you have more than anecdotal evidence, that is not a wise choice at all.

He should avoid the 797 because it is an old model that is probably not worth more than $100 but a newer model would be a fine choice.

Onkyo TX-DS797

I sold one on eBay for about $500 about a year ago... The 797 had an inherant clicking problem that Onkyo said was Dolby's fault, and Dolby said was Onkyo's fault.

Go to www.audioreview.com as a decent source of review's, although some are somewhat influenced by "pride of ownership"...I mean, what are they gonna say, "I just sunk a thousand dollars into a piece of junk...":) . If you were looking for a budget used receiver, go with a Denon AVR-3802 or 3803...for less than $500.

I'm currently selling B stock Factory Sealed Denon AVR-3805's for $650 on eBay!

Its Onkyo's fault. 797's are notorious for that clicking problem, a friend of mine's had the exact same issue.

if 2 grand is your budget. I would forget about the seprates. Unless you can get a good deal on some used stuff. As for outlaw there are some die hard fans of there audio equipment. But me personally i would look into a nice a/v reciever with that budget. Something like the denon 3805 or the new 3806. Nad t773.
