Hi all,

I got a Yamaha HTR 5790 and now looking for a suitable mate (speaker wise). I would appreciate your advice/experience with any of these:

Acoustic Res, Advent, Athena, Atlantic Tech, Axiom, BIC, Bose, Boston, B&W, Cambridge, Canton, Celestion, Cerwin, Def Tech, Energy, Infinity, JBL, KEF, Klipsch, M&K, Mirage, Mission, Mordaunt, NHT, Niles, Paradigm, Polk, Pyle, Tannoy, Wharfedale, Yamaha

I understand that all these are not in the same league -- I would also appreciate putting them in their respectvie leagues, if possible.

Also in particular, how's Yamaha's own speakers? Also, any thoughts about going with a subwoofer specialty maker (like SVS, Hsu, Velodyne) vs. stikcing with the same maker as for mains?

Your budget, room size, type of listening (home theater/music) will determine most suggestions. list a few restrictions and requirements for your speakers.
For the last part...Matching your sub with the rest of the speaker system (asteticts aside) is not all that important.

Your budget will give a good starting point for suggestions!

I am very happy with my Paradigm speakers but I am saving for a SVS sub...
A friend of mine is very happy with his speakers - Rockets I think they are called - he got them at www.av123.com

A rule of thumb (with a few high-dollar exceptions) is that a subwoofer company (Hsu Research, SVS, Velodyne) will give you alot more performance for the same amount of money. However buying from the same company as your loudspeakers can get you a similar looking subwoofer (matching finish and all that).

Two quick things

First you really need to narrow down the search by providing a budget and room dimensions and any constraints you have the way the other guys have said. It is impossible to group those speakers by the best quality or performance without knowing your budget because most of those companies have many lines of speakers ranging from $200 a pair to several thousand a speaker. I might like energy C-3 speakers better than I like B&W 500 series bookshelfs but thefact remains that both of those sets are a few hundred dollars a pair and B&W makes speaker that cost several thousand dollars each and have diamond tweeters. Those diamond speakers require seperate amps to run them that are also pretty expensive. Not to harp on it but the budgets seen on this site range from $500 to $20k or more. That doesn't mean that the person wanting to spend $500 for a HTIB deserves a less thorough answer, but they won't get too many suggestions way out of their budget.

Secondly what the heck happened to PSB? That is a pretty long list and you left off PSB? Oh man what a rube, lol;) . Seriously though you may want to add them to the list., Depending on what you are looking at PSB could be a real contender for you. They make several lines from almost HTIBs to pretty expensive floor speakers and are always well reviewed and considered to be a real "Bang for the buck" brand. High quality at a medium-low cost if you will. Oh well one more to consider. Good luck with your purchase.

For $2000, I would get ascend 340's across the fronts, 170's in the back, and a Hsu vtf-3 sub. It is $1872 shipped, giving you some extra cash for stands. You can wall mount the 170's if you want.

It would be hard to beat that! It will shake the paint off your walls in that room and likely others if you want it to.

You can also ship them back in 30 days if you don't like them.
