Seeking a fuller sound in my home stereo setup

I have a modest turntable setup that sounds decent, but whenever I go to my buddy's house I'm envious of how full and warm his records sound. He says his equipment is all from the thrift store, and I want my records to sound that good!

I currently have an AT-LP60 Audio-Technica turntable hooked up to a Dayton Audio APA150 amp which powers two Pioneer SP-FS5f floor speakers. What can I do to flesh out the sound? Add a powered subwoofer?

Also, I'm a cheap, cheap man, so I'm not seeking the best thing available. Just something a little better.

Generally, speakers are sound quality. A sub is nice to have, especially if your speakers don't play too low. But if you can get speakers down to around mid 30Hz on the low end, you might not even need the sub. The electronics can play a roll in sound also... but not as much as you'd think.

Obviously budget is a thing. No worries, there. We mostly like finding the best bang for our buck, here.

It looks like either of those should work with your Amp. Regardless, just a couple ideas to start the ball rolling.

I would describe the Pioneer speakers as having a warm sound already. A subwoofer will probably add to the warm signature.

What equipment/speakers does he have?

What are your rooms like, is yours sterile modern with big hard flat surfaces, no carpet, while he has a more sound dampening room?

I think we can help a little more if you can tell us a little more:

- Your approx (guessimate is good enough )room dimensions.
- How far do you sit from your SP-FS5F?
- Your friend's speakers model.
- Your friend's warm sound turntable and cartridge model number

Also, note that not all record sounds are warm, it depends on the recording. Unless you do a properly set up AB comparison using he same records, it is not always easy to tell if his system really sounds better than yours..

Why would you hose down a room? Sorry, couldn't resist (it's damping, not dampening).

This was my first thought, room differences rather than gear. Also interested in what tt/cartridge setup he (i.e. his friend) has. Adding a sub might be an idea, tho.

Haha, good catch. Guess it was a more norwegian(ish) version, it happens.

But ye, we need a lot more information to be able to do more then wildly guess.
