Seeking a certian video effect

After seeing my friends Bang and Olufsen tube TV I have compared every other picture quality I have seen to it. I just invested 7,500 on a panasonic HDTV plasma and am trying to reach a similar pictue quality.

Have you noticed that when watching a REALLY good quality screen the things you see in the background and the motion of the camera seems allmost flawless? On my plasma I notice slight "gohsting" when watching DVD's. The picture is perfectly clear until things start moving.

Could this be fixed by simply buying a higher quality progressive scan DVD
player with a better processer in it?

I have an $89progressive scan Toshibe DVD...will buying a Denon 2910 for $1000 and use the HDMI connection make an extreem difference?

There are two things that will help...

1. Exactly what you suggested - a better DVD with internal up-conversion to an HD format and a digital connection.

2. Get better DVDs. Bottom line is that many DVDs don't have very good video encoding and you want to be 100% sure that the DVD you are using to judge your image is of high quality. There are reviews of DVD quality available online at various places.

If you haven't seen HDTV on your plasma yet, it is time to upgrade your cable box or DSS and check it out. HD is the standard by which all your other viewing should be trying to reach. Not DVD, not digital cable - true HD. Either 1080i or 720p native viewing. Even within HD there are some shows that look better than others.

While it may seem a little frustrating at first not to get all the quality you expect from your television, you will be ahead of the pack as more and more HD material (and next year bluray?) comes along.

For a cheap test, since you'vve got nothing to lose, instead of running your budget DVD player to the display via component, try it with S-video and send the signal interlaced. I'll bet you'll find the picture improved as the panel will probably do a better job of deinterlacing the signal than your present player.

Mort (who agrees that it's time to upgrade the DVD player anyway)
