I'm in the 'current display technologies just don't quite have the picture quality I can get excited about yet' camp.

I'm being a bit of a perfectionist - any decent tv would be 'ok' and immeasurably better than what I watch now - but I've just waited for something better.

After too long waiting, now I've been inching towards getting the Panasonic 900 front projector, site unseen based on rave reviews and the low sale price.

Now, I just saw the info on the SED technology, and it's described as almost just what I'd like, the 'as good or better than crt image quality' etc.

Downsides? Mostly that it's apparently not really coming out much for over a year, and possibly somewhat higher cost.

So, it's 'just get the projector for tv/hdtv/movies/pc gaming and don't worry about SED', or wait.

Any info? If SED is likely to be very expensive ($7,500)+ for a couple years, and especially its relative image quality to the Panasonic (apples and oranges, I know), those are factors. I'd feel a bit foolish to get the Panasonic after waiting quite a while only to see the tv 'I've been waiting for' released 16 months later, though.

I have been interested in SED for a few years now. I was really excited when Canon/Toshiba announced the impending release of products BUT…..first it was supposed to be released at the end of this year. Next, they said the end of ’07. NOW I hear not until ’08 as they want to enter the market at a “competitive” price point.

Seems to me Canon and Toshiba are going full speed in reverse on this one. Maybe with a bit of luck they will be out and affordable when I’m ready to replace my Tosh 50HDX82 RPTV. If I had to replace it now I would probably go for an RPDLP as IMHO that would be the most cost effective move for the interim and I could get one with HDMI inputs just in case the HD/Blu Ray situation shakes itself out (fat chance).

I hope the SED thing works out but, there seems to be a few other new technologies that might be very interesting like OLED and Laser and such. The situation should be really interesting over the next few years and because of that I wouldn’t pop really big bucks on anything right at this point.

Yep, looks like there may be the off chance that SED will be obsolete before it’s even released on a consumer level but, then again, a new HD technology could emerge and do the same thing to HD DVD and Blue Ray and I’d really love to see that happen from the way they’re tryin’ to shaft us with two competing formats.

It is nearly impossible to compete in what is almost a commodity market for flat panel displays. I believe Korea may have killed SED before it even began. They are chasing a diminishing price point with no manufacturing plants or volume history.
