SD DVD Player vs. Upconverting DVD Player

I have a 1080i 50-inch Sony LCD Projection TV (KF-50WE610) and I use a progressive scan Samsung DVD player hooked up using the component video connections. I understand that every TV will convert the video that it receives to its native resolution, maybe some better than others. Will I really see a difference on SD DVDs by using an upconvering player like the Oppo DV-981H or maybe even the Toshiba HD-A3? I seen many posts here regarding the "format-war" but, I am wondering how obvious a difference there is on just SD DVDs.

It depends on how good your current player is. My 980's picture quality is a step up from my 2900, but the difference is subtle, not night and day. The format war is all but over, so I would say it is more than safe to buy a Blu-ray player at this point, and they do upscaling (some better than others) also.

I have a Samsung DVD-C631P purchased for around $100 about 5 years ago at Costco. Probably on the very low end for progressive scan DVD players. There is a switch in the back for 480i or 480p. I have it set to 480p.
