Screenplay4805 vs. PT-AE900U for blacks

Hello,

I was just loaned a PT-AE900U to audition for a few days and got it hooked up last night. The colors right out of the box are much better than the 4805. I also see no rainbows (yeh!) or hear no fan unless I try to really listen for it. I have not tweaked the unit and am using the Cinema2 setting with low power as well. The blacks don't seem to be nearly as dark as the 4805. After adjusting the Panny (which I will try tonight) should I be able to get better blacks out of the Panny than the 4805?

Thanks!

The Panasonic is a LCD projector, while the InFocus is DLP. Only DLPs will have the Rainbow Effect (RBE) for some people, whereas LCDs will have the Screen Door Effect (SDE). The Panasonic is very good at reducing SDE with its SmoothScreen Technology. DLPs generally are better at producing blacks, but the Panasonic 900 is very good in its own right. What are you projecting the image onto? Try tweaking with AVIA, and let us know your impression afterwards. Cinema 1 is best for viewing DVD in a light controlled room.

I am projecting onto a Da-lite pull down high contrast grey screen. I will try the Cinema1 mode and adjust with DVE. I don't have AVIA. I just thought the Panny was supposed to give cheaper DLPs a run for their money or best them on blacks. I knew I wouldn't see rainbows due to the technology...just happy to watch a dark scene with flashes of bright light and not experience them. The Panny does well with screendoor effect; I could see none until I got about 5' from my 92" screen. Thanks for the input.
