Screen size formula

When we say that 1.5 times the screen width is generally as close as one ought to be to be, and two times the screen width is likely ideal, do we mean diagonal screen width, or actual image area width?

I'm trying to decide on the right screen for me right now for a dedicated HT room: 13' x 19' with 8' ceiling. Dark walls & medium toned ceiling. No windows.

The screen will likely be a Draper, so 106" (actual 92") or the 92" (actual 80").

(Panasonic AE700).

Thank you!

"Width" refers to the width. 'Diagonal' and 'Height' are the other two dimensions. Some people give recommended viewing distances according to screen height. I prefer using width as a reference.

Each display is different by the way - no real standard since they all perform very differently. There are rough guidelines, but check each review for a recommendation.
