Can a screen be mounted over a fireplace without fear of heat dammage?

I have been looking to mount a new LCD TV over my new fireplace. I have room for up to a 50'' set. I have been getting cold feet on the placement of the TV. If a projector and a screen would be a better choice for my placement i think i may go that route. I have around $3k for a budget. Also my seeting distance from the screen would be approx 12' . If any one has any recommendations or advice on my situation, i would love to hear from you.

The reason for wanting to mount in that position is that our living area is going to be centered around the fireplace.

Gas, i have the mantle spaced according to the manufactors reccomendations, also there is a deflector on the firebox itself designed to keep the heat out in front of the mantle.

There are two things wrong with over the fireplace mounting. This comes up again and again.

The screen is too high and it is very uncomfortable. No matter what the fireplace manufacturer says, heat rises and your TV will run too hot and have a shorter life. Over fireplace mounting has nothing to recommend it and everything against it.

I have two fireplaces, one wood and one gas, and both have a lot of heat rising above the mantle piece.

TLS, thanks again for your advice. I pretty well know where you stand on this issue. Im asking in reference to dammage to a projector screen (not LCD TV), or viewing trouble due heat waves/vapors when mounting over a fireplace. I would like to hear from others who may have tried this or has had experience with this good or bad. As far as the height of the mounting, i value your professional opinion on the medical risks involved. But if a person sits on the front row of a movie theatre, the amount of head tilt to see the screen would be greater than viewing a screen in the location im trying to use. Im not overly concerned on the angle. Anyone else have a screen mounted over the fireplace? If so id love to hear your experience, Good or bad.

You shouldn't have a problem mounting over the mantle. I would assume you have one of the newer high efficiency gas fireplaces. The glass front will keep the exhaust out of the room and they are allow only the heat to radiate out. Most of these have a fan that allows you to control how much heat is put into the room.

Most mounts will allow for the screen to be tilted downward to some degree. But it can be a stress on the neck if you look up all the time. It won't be too bad if you're in a recliner chair.

I feel like if i put a nice LCD TV up there i will not use the fireplace as much as if there were nothing there to be dammaged. Im not familiar with the projectors and what quality of a picture a person can expect with a low budget model ($2500) and low budget screen ($400). I dont get to purchase large items such as flat panel TVs very often, and i really cant afford to make a $3000 dollar mistake , by putting it in jeopardy over the fireplace. I think ill try and view a few projectors and see what they may offer. Any sugestions on what model may be the best in my price range?

As far as putting a 3k tv above a fire place that might be used... I wouldn't high heat can screw with anything... and if you don't get to buy toys very often, why risk it...

I'm sure it would look very pretty, but are you willing to take the risk??? If you are insistant on doing it... maybe try putting a couple of different sized candles in the area where you plan to mount... one stubby, one skinny, etc... and fire it up and see what happens...

I'm a projector person and don't really care for huge tv's that are smaller and cost way more than a projector setup... however projectors are a lil more tempremental, but problems can be avoided by setting it up in certain ways... however, every set up is a lil different... you really got to get dirty with the details of your situation... when I got started I did a lot of research in places like here, avsforum, projetorpeople, projectorcentral, etc...

The devil is in the details... do your homework and make sure its pretty solid... and ask a lot of questions...
