Scientific Atlanta runs hot and cold. Hot, because they work with companies like Time Warner Cable to enable users to inexpensively lease high definition dual-tuner DVRs on the cheap. Cold, because their software is often buggy and products like their Explorer 8000HD still lack enabled DVI outputs with HDCP. Now SA has announced a new product that will function as a multi-room media center, including dual HD tuners, DVR functionality and even a DVD burner. Since Scientific Atlanta will likely work closely with cable companies to take into account broadcast flags, this also means that any shows archived to DVD may not be playable on any other players except their set top box. We'll know more when the units are released in the fourth quater of 2005.
