Anyone catch Satriani on HDNET? I saw about half and hour and it was a little much....the guy is great, he's a fretboard magician, but after a while it all starts sounding redundant.

What do you think he needs: A. vocalist B. different band c. different material d. other?

Eddie Van Halen had Roth and Hagar. Steve Stevens :Idol Vai: Zappa, Roth

Guitar magic can only go so far before the "ok, what's next" factor kicks in.

What do you think it'll take?

He came off a little weird in the interview with Matt Pinfield. And that hat looked like he dug it out of the dumpster

Yeah, what was up with that hat?? I've been listening to his stuff for years, but it's getting dull.

I've seen Satch and Vai live and performances are chalk and cheese. For starters, Vai doesn't mind singing a bit, so it really livens up the show. Vai also gets the crowd really involved, mucks around with them and stuff. He also not to serious that he can't have fun with the music i.e. his version of Led Zepllin's Black Dog was halarious.
On the other hand Satch, who is a talented guitar genius, is just that. It doesn't make him a show man nor a performer. It is like art, you just observe it. I think a new band with some persomality as well as singing a bit would go a long way. (hey that smily looks like Satch..)

I agree, I think he will benefit from a vocalist that can compliment his style. And I know it was probably the venue, but a more interesting backdrop to the stage (visuals, multi-media, etc.) will go a long ways in the total experience (a la Pink Floyd). His music is art and as such it should be presented, the Louvre is not to shabby a stage to showcase DaVinci! Good observation:  does look like Satch!

I grew up near-worshipping Via, Satch, and Eric Johnson. It was great to see Satch in HD after all this time...

I've always found though that Satch is best listened to while going 80 down a freeway with the top down. Not the best to enjoy the acoustic detail, but much better for getting into the mood of the music!

I could never really listen to Satch sitting down.

I did enjoy the interview minus the funny hat. I met him in person back when Flying in a Blue Dream came out and what you see on the screen was very true to the person I met - very laid back and zen.
