Satellite Receiver Output Volume

I have noticed that I have a much lower output volume from my satellite receiver in certain applications. It is a Direct TV HD Box that I have connected to my Onkyo 805 via HDMI (BJ Cables F2 series) . I really notice that when I listen to any music i.e. live concerts or the XM radio channels it is especially lower. I have to run it up to almost reference levels on my volume display and I am not even coming close to max output my speakers and subs can handle. I am curious if it is an issue with the receiver or with my sat receiver. Regular TV is pretty good it is mainly the music.

Anybody seen this before......

Thanks

Jeff

I'm not suprised, audio levels for TV in general are all over the place. I have the same hardware as you, however I run my HDMI connection straight to the TV with an optical connection to the 805 when I want to listen to the DTV audio through my sound system (TV speakers are fine with me for most shows that I watch).

I do not think that DTV has much control over the audio level it transmits; depends on the source providers.

One other comment, remember that Reference Level only refers to the level that movies are mixed at, and the level they should be on DVDs and Blu-rays. For other materials (CDs, TV, concerts-even on Blu-ray) you just never know what you are going to get.

I have the same problem with DirecTV. I wish they would normalize all the signals.

Try an analog cable. Most likely, it will be a lot louder. Digital signal levels can't exceed 0VU, unlike analog. It hits a brick wall at 0VU at the output and if the signal level exceeds what the digital input needs, it breaks up, hard.
