Well...tonight we took a break from FX and superheros. It was French film night. Sarah's Key is quite a good movie, but really depressing. It reminds me of Pan's Labyrinth in its grimness. The lead character is a magazine writer, working on an article about the deportation of Jews to death camps in WW II. Coincidentally, her husband is also rehabbing an apartment in Paris that has a link to the purge of Parisian Jews. She becomes obsessed with uncovering the story of the former inhabitants of the apartment.

You can probably guess that this isn't going to be a happy story, either for the victims or for the people whose present is haunted by what happened. It's quite an excellent movie, but, like many movies like that, the lesson, "Don't have dictatorships, don't kill innocent people, mass violence is terrible" is self evident and having that lesson demonstrated in a movie just leaves me feeling exhausted without knowing how to change human idiocy. If you need a seriously depressing movie, this is it.

I like Pan's Labyrinth so I'll have to check out Sarah's Key.
