Samsung PN59D530 at Costco for $989

Anyone here have experience with this set? Is it any good? The display was facing the entrance to Costco so I couldn't tell how good or bad this set is. There was too much glare coming off the screen. Far from an ideal placement. It got very mixed reviews at Amazon. As you all know, I maybe in the market to replace my entire HT suite save maybe the speakers.

Yes, plasma sucks.

But, it's better than LCD.

I haven't seen that particular model I don't believe... or maybe I have. I recently hung a low-end Samsung plasma and I did NOT get the model number for it before I put it in place. But, it was certainly an acceptable image for a cheap plasma and it seems like if people aren't overly picky (remember, it's cheap!) the cheap displays today certainly rival the cheap displays from six or seven years ago.

My Sampo 50" plasma NEVER looked very good, but still ran me $3,000 in 2004. Now, a $500 50" display will destroy the quality of that old set. So, I think that at the very least, your expectation should be for acceptable quality.

If you want very good quality, then you will need to go with a 7000 series Samsung at the least, remembering at all times that plasma sucks eggs.

I recently bought Panasonic TC-P55ST30 for $980 at Electronic-Expo.
It's higher model than Samsung PN59D530, probably more comparable to 6500

I love it and I can't possibly imagine having anything better, other than a bigger screen

That would be your own call. Unlike my regular internet purchases, Large screen TV wasn't really smooth and easy, but I put 99% of blame on the shipping company. EE were helpful and professional.
If you intend to haul almost 60" tv in back of your car - FIY: Your vehicle must be big enough to allow to transport the box vertically, or you'll rely on costco delivery service anyhow.

Saving on sales taxes by purchasing from other state (NJ for me) allowed some extra savings

I spent last week in North Conway NH as a mini vacation doing the Mount Washington thing. Walmart in North Conway had a 65" Toshiba for $1389 but it didn't look all that good.


I guess that Samsung, its 2012 replacement PN60D530 and the LG 60PA6500 are equivalent in that they are at the bottom tier of their respective manufacturers. The glare on the Samsung was really bad, much worse than by old LCD Vizio which I found to have a nice image. Not the last word in black resolution, but the overall picture and color was very pleasing to the eye.


After doing some googling, I stumbled across this site, http://reviews.plasmatvbuyingguide.com. I was wrong about the LG. I still don't want a 3D TV and this TV fits both my bugget and size requirement.

I would look at the Panasonic TC-P50ST50. I think the specs are much better, besides being 3D it also has built in wifi and DLNA = more fun. All for $200 more and 5" less of screen.
